Membership Terms

Last updated: 4 October 2026

1. About these terms

These terms explain what it means to be a member of Square Lens Alliance (SLA), a network of creative and film professionals in the north of England. SLA is currently run by its founding members, with administration and data managed by Flying Duck Studio Lab Ltd (company number 14254195, registered office 10 Princess Street, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8HG).

By joining SLA, you agree to these terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we use your personal data.

2. Who can join

Membership is open to anyone working, studying or interested in the creative, film and media industries. You must be 16 or over to become a member. Some events take place at licensed venues or in the evening and may be for over-18s only; we will say so when we announce them. We may decline or end a membership if these terms are not followed.

3. How to join and leave

  • You join by completing the membership form.

  • Membership is currently free. If we ever introduce a membership fee, we will tell members in advance and nobody will be charged without agreeing to it.

  • You can leave at any time by emailing contact@flyingduckstudiolab.co.uk. We will remove you from our member records and mailing lists, as described in our Privacy Policy.

4. What membership includes

Members can take part in meetings, talks, workshops, networking sessions, member spotlights and other activities we organise, and receive news about opportunities. What we offer may change over time, and some activities may have limited places.

5. Code of conduct

SLA is an inclusive, supportive community. We ask all members and guests to:

  • treat everyone with respect, whatever their background, identity, experience or role;

  • not harass, discriminate against, bully or intimidate anyone, in person or online;

  • give feedback constructively, especially in critique sessions;

  • respect confidentiality: work-in-progress, ideas and personal stories shared in sessions should not be shared outside without permission;

  • not use SLA events or channels mainly to sell or self-promote in a way that is unwelcome to others;

  • follow the rules of the venues we use.

If you experience or see behaviour that breaks this code, please tell a founding member or email contact@flyingduckstudiolab.co.uk. We will treat concerns seriously and confidentially. We may ask someone to leave an event, or end their membership, if the code is broken.

6. Your work and member features

You keep all rights in your own work. If you take part in a member spotlight, “Meet the Community” feature, screening or showcase, you confirm that you have the right to share the material you send us, and you give SLA permission to show it on our website, social media and at events for that purpose. You can ask us to remove a feature at any time.

7. Photos and filming at events

We sometimes take photos or film at events to share what SLA does. We will tell you when this happens. If you would prefer not to appear, tell the organiser on the day or email us, and we will not use identifiable images of you.

8. Paid events and tickets

Most SLA activities are free. Where we charge for an event:

  • prices and what is included will be shown when you book;

  • tickets are booked through a third-party platform (currently Eventbrite), whose terms also apply;

  • tickets are non-refundable if you can’t attend, but you can pass your ticket to someone else by letting us know;

  • if we cancel an event, or make a major change (such as the date or venue) that doesn’t suit you, we will give you a full refund.

This does not affect your legal rights as a consumer.

9. Liability

We take reasonable care when running events, but we are not responsible for loss of or damage to personal belongings, or for advice or opportunities shared between members. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as SLA grows, for example if SLA becomes an independent organisation or introduces paid membership. We will tell members about significant changes.
